Inauguration of KVASU

In a splendid function organized at College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pookot, at 11:20 am on 02-18-2010, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala Shri. V. S. Achuthanandan laid the foundation stone of headquarters of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU). Hon'ble Minister of Animal Husbandry, Food and Civil Supplies Shri. C. Divakaran presided over the function. Hon'ble Minister of Agriculture Shri. Mullakkara Retnakaran was the Guest of Honour.

Welcome speech was delivered by Shri. P. K. Mohanti IAS (Addl. Chief Secretary, GoK). Report on the new University was presented by Dr. S. Subbayya IAS, Special Officer, KVASU. Shri. M. V. Shreyams Kumar MLA, Shri. K. C. Kunhiraman MLA, Shri. P. Krishnaprasad MLA, Smt. A Devaki, Shri. K. R. Viswambharan (VC, KAU), Shri, T. Bhaskaran IAS (DC, Wayanad), Smt. E. R. Pushpa, Dr. R. Vijayakumar (Director, AHD, GoK), Smt. Sarojini (Director, Dairy Development Dept) and Ms. K. Anitha have also spoken on the occasion. Dr. A. Jalaludeen (Assoc. Dean, CoVAS Pookot) expressed vote of thanks. The meeting came to an end at 12:30 pm.


AKVNA Annual Meet



AKVNA's 2010 convention at Chicago on July 17 was a grand success. Our chief guest, Sri. Mons Joseph (MLA, Ex Minister, Govt. of Kerala) lighted the lamp and inaugurated the function. Dr. Rajeev Nair presided over the meeting. Dr. Joseph Luka welcomed the gathering and Dr. Justin Fernandez offered vote of thanks. Dr. Krishna Menon and Dr. Mathew Varughese gave felicitation addresses. Dr. Lesley Luka was the MC for the function. The meeting was followed by a grand dinner and variety entertainments by professional artists and members and family. Malayalam TV channels (Asianet, Jaihind) and various members of press were present to give coverage to the function. The following were elected as new office bearers

Dr. Mathew Varughese elected in to FOKANA
   

Dr. T. V. Mathew (Jr) now Dr. Mathew Varughese was elected as Associate Additional Treasurer for FOKANA (Federation of Kerala Associations in North America) for next 2 years. He was elected for this postion at the FOKANA convention held in Albany, Newyork, on July 4, 2010. He was a Graduate of Kerala Veterinary college for the 1970 batch, graduated in 1974.

He resides in Detroit, Michigan with his wife Anni and running a small animal clinic in Westland, MI.

He is currently the Secretary, Board of Trustees, Detroit, Kerala Club and Board of Director, Association of Kerala Veterinarians in North America (AKVNA). Previously he has been Diocesian Council member for American Dioces of Malankara orthodox church, President, Detroit, Kerala Club, Secretary, Detroit Eccumenical Committee and Secretary, St. Thomas Orthodox church, Detroit

Dr. G. Ajitkumar bagged Dr. G. Nirmalan Award
 

Dr. G. Ajitkumar, Associate Professor, Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, COVAS, Mannuthy bagged Dr. G. Nirmalan Award (2009-10) for the Best Research Article published by a veterinarian of the State. His article entitled “Comparative efficacy of bromocriptine, cabergoline and thyroxine in inducing oestrus in bitches” and published in Veterinary Research Communications (2010) 34:65–69, DOI 10.1007/s11259-009-9333-1 was adjudged as the best research article. The award instituted in memory of Dr. G. Nirmalan, Former Dean, COVAS, Mannuthy consisted of a certificate of merit and Rs. 5000/- as cash and was presented at the annual general body meeting of Veterinarians Welfare Society held at Thrissur on 18th April 2010. Dr. G. Ajitkumar is presently pursuing post-doctoral research at University of Calgary, Canada. 

 

Dr. Harikrishnan V. S. (1997 batch) receives JALAS Young Scientist Award
Harikrishnan v s   Dr. Harikrishnan V. S. (1997 batch) has been awarded JALAS International Award (Japanese Association for Laboratory Animal Science) as Young Scientist 2009 in Laboratary Animal Science field and has been invited to the 57th annual meeting of JALAS to be held in Kyoto, Japan, in May 2010. The award is offered to one person per year from each Asian Countries by JALAS. He will receive the award in the General Assembly of JALAS and will deliver his work on the ”Development of a persistant Interventional Hind Limb Ischemia Model In New Zealand White Rabbits” in the oral session. Dr. Harikrishnan V. S. is presently working at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Bio Medical Technology Wing as Scientist-B. Vocational short term training on “Polymerase chain reaction and related techniques”



A vocational short term training programme on “PCR and related techniques” was conducted at the Department of Veterinary Parasitology, COVAS, Pookot, for 15 days from 18-01-2010 to 05-02-2010. Dr. Reghu Ravindran, Assistant Professor was the Course Director. The training was intended for graduates of B.V.Sc & AH and M.Sc (Life Sciences) aspiring for higher studies and research. There were theory and hands on practical sessions on the basic tools of Biotechnology like DNA isolation, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, gel documentation and PCR-RFLP.

Training on Hematology and Hemoparasites at COVAS Pookot

Short term training on “Hematology and Hemoparasites” funded by the Animal Husbandry Department, Kerala was conducted at the Department of Veterinary Parasitology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pookot from 12-01-10 to 16-01-10.  Dr. K. Devada, Professor and Head, Dept. of Parasitology was the course Director and classes were held in the disciplines of Parasitology, Pathology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Medicine. There were 10 participants from various districts.
